Simplehost Web Hosting

Moving your website

If you have an existing website and would like to move it from another provider we have put together a simple plan to help you get up and running.

What do I need?

If you have a web or managed plan with us you should have received your confirmation and setup email containing your login details, you may also get the details you need by logging into your My Account page and selecting 'Server Details'.

Getting Started

The order of steps to get your website working on Simplehost services is not so important, the aim is to get your website to a working and stable state before you make changes to your current DNS records, or name servers.

Here is a basic list of steps to tick off when moving your website.

  • A copy of your website documents from your current provider or backup.  If you use a database, a copy of your database too!
  • Login to your Simplehost FTP account and upload your website documents into your website.co.nz/ directory..
  • If you use a database, access phpMyAdmin from your My Account page, or via SSH and restore your database.
  • Database connection and login details should be checked in your configuration files, if you use a database.
  • If you would like to host email for your domain with Simplehost, login to the mailadmin from your My Account page and be sure to setup any mailboxes and aliases you need.

How to Test

Great work! you are almost there.

There are various ways of testing your website on the Simplehost server before you make any DNS adjustments.

We can setup a temporary sub-domain to access the Simplehost copy of your website, just let us know if you would like this setup.

Another option is to add an entry in your computers 'hosts' file.  By entering a line for your website domain name in the hosts file it allows you to test the website on the Simplehost server.

Windows

Open up notepad, or wordpad and edit the appopriate hosts file for your Windows version.

Windows 95/98/Me: c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP and onwards: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Mac OS X or Linux

The hosts file on all UNIX-based operating systems is /etc/hosts

Simply edit the file using your favourite editor.  You may need root (sometimes using 'sudo') access.

Add an entry

Using the Simplehost server IP Address provided in your confirmation and setup email, or the 'Server Details' information.

Add an entry following this example

IP Address                  Website domain name

123.45.67.89                company.co.nz

This is what the below looked like in our case using notepad in Windows 7.

Save the file - you can leave it open while testing.

Restart your browser and Test

Just incase there is any DNS or content cache held in your browser, close it, and start it again.

Visit your website and ensure it functions as you expect.

You can remove the entry in the hosts file you created earlier if you are finished testing.  Save it and close the editor.

Moving the website

With the above complete you are now safe to make the necessary DNS adjustments that will have your website domain name pointing to the Simplehost web server.

Making these changes is usually an easy change at your domain registrar.  We have Domain Registration & Setup information that will guide you through making these changes.

If you need any help or advice don't hesitate to contact us.

DNS changes take some time to propagate, but will complete usually within 12-24 hours.
